Who Are We?
'Pumau ki te Ora' is a service under Te Runanga o Kirikiriroa, that seeks to educate and make young people aware of the ever present dangers of Alcohol and Drugs. We aim to engage young people in open dialogue about their views, and to counteract any 'myths' they may have about Alcohol and Drugs, by providing them with factual information.
'Pumau ki te Ora' in a broad sense means to take ownership of or to reclaim one's life. The main purpose of our service is to teach young people to be responsible for themselves, so that their actions promote for them a life of continued health and well-being.
Why Have a Service for Young People?
There is a growing concern in Aotearoa about the prevalence of Alcohol and Drug use amongst young people. We are constantly being bombarded with images, that promote and glorify alcohol and drugs, whilst ignoring the serious and often negative consequences alcohol and drug use can have on young lives.
These images target a young audience, however the information is often incomplete, disjointed, and grossly misleading. 'Pumau ki te Ora' seeks to simply present the facts about alcohol and drugs so that young people are in a better position to make safe and well-informed choices for themselves.
What Do We Do?
- We facilitate the entry of Young People into Rongo Atea (Drug and Alcohol Youth Residential Treatment Service)
- We provide continuing care and follow up for Young People who have completed the programme at Rongo-Atea
- We provide support and education to whanau on how best to support their Young Person to maintain a clean and sober lifestyle
- We deliver Drug and Alcohol Information/ Education
- We deliver one off presentations to other groups in the community about the harmful effects of Alcohol and Drugs
- We deliver Comprehensive Presentations about Te Runanga O Kirikiriroa; her services, and in particular Rongo Atea to Hapu / Iwi, Community and Government Groups
