Research & Development
The Research and Development Unit aims to provide evidence that supports the advancement of tangata whenua at local and international levels. In order to achieve this, our key objectives are:
- to develop research proposals that have a strong collaborative approach to key individuals, organisations and communities;
- to conduct research projects with an emphasis on direct practical outcomes to communities, wherever possible;
- to assist communities to increase their research capacity and facilitate options for funding regarding specific research projects;
- to complete research projects based on kaupapa Maori research methodologies; and,
- to produce clear evidence regarding best models of practice for the services of the Runanga, to increase the efficacy of such services.

Completed Projects to Date Include:
- Phase I and II of the Reduction of Gambling Harm Project (one of only two such projects in the country);
- Scoping Exercise for High and Complex Needs (Mental Health) Provision in the Waikato District Health Board Area;
- Evaluation of the Pai Ake Solutions Kaupapa Maori Dual Diagnosis Tangata Whai ora Community Support Pilot project;
- Department of Corrections Cultural Supervision Pilot Project;
- Treaty of Waitangi Training to Hamilton City Councillors;
- Focus Group and Facilitation Training to Community based Research Assistants;
- Scoping Exercise in regards to research and development needs of Te Runanga o Kirikiriroa
- Evaluation of Dual Diagnosis Assessment Tools and Practices in the Waikato District Health Board Area.
