Te Whakaruruhau Maori Women's Refuge

Established in 1987 Te Whakaruruhau was the first Maori womens Refuge in Aotearoa. She continues to lead the country and Maori movement with her innovative and challenging role in the community.

Te Whakaruruhau Maori Women's Refuge provides services including safe housing and advocacy to Maori women, families and children, resulting from domestic / family violence and abusive environments.

There is a small cost associated with the safe accommodation. They are contactable 24 hrs a day and have a crisis response team who work alongside the Hamilton Police.

They provide education and training regarding domestic violence and advice and information regarding legal issues.  Te Whakaruruhau is most well known for her progressive and almost fearless approach to challenging those things which allow violence towards women and children to happen.
